Passage: Luke 11:37–44, Luke 11:53–54

Have you ever seen NBA players greet one another on the court? It’s a dazzling array of movement. Hands are flying, fingers are twirling, and there may even be some dancing. Some of these handshakes are so elaborate, they must practice for hours to get it right. Basketball players aren’t the first people to have elaborate greetings. The religious leaders of the First Century focused a lot of their attention on public greetings. Unfortunately, these leaders were more interested in honoring one another and forgot about the people who needed encouragement and friendship. Jesus refocuses our attention to those that need love the most.
