COVID-19 Statement | March 13, 2020

web blog post-3

Dear Church Family:

Twenty-four hours made a big difference….again. In an abundance of caution, and after much consultation, consideration, and prayer, we have made the decision to cancel all Sunday worship services, Sunday School, and all Sunday afternoon and evening activities for this Sunday, March 15, 2020. Additionally, all activities, ministries, gatherings, and the mid-week day school are cancelled through Saturday, March 21, 2020. Decisions regarding the cancellation of other services and ministries will be made on a week to week basis.

Why did the leaders of First Baptist Friendswood make this decision?

1. Deciding to cancel worship for Sunday was not taken lightly and was certainly not driven by or laden with fear. As Christians, we want to encourage all of you to exude calm. Jesus was described as the “Prince of Peace.” We can all be a voice of reason in these unusual times, especially to our family and our neighbors. Join your pastoral staff in prayer and speaking the peace of Christ often in these unusual days.

2. As was stated yesterday in COVID statement 1, we are a wonderfully multi-generational church. We want to do all we can to not only protect our church family, but to also protect those most vulnerable in our community. Yesterday afternoon, every school district in our area cancelled school for at least the next week. A request has also been made that gatherings of 250 or more be cancelled. We are also joining arms with many other churches in our community who cancelled services for this Sunday.

3. In consultation with medical professionals, we have learned the medical community is trying to slow the transfer rate of COVID 19, to ensure all of those with the virus can receive appropriate care and to further ensure other patients in hospitals receive the care they need. Concern is growing over doctors and hospitals being overrun with patients. We can love our neighbors, and most especially those most vulnerable to COVID 19, by limiting contact in large crowds.
